Reflections: Changes

This month’s newsletter is a little shorter than usual. A lot has been changing for me in all sorts of
exciting ways and at the same time that means saying goodbye to some things and making decisions
about what to let go of and what to continue.

I realised that I had been putting myself under pressure thinking I ‘must’ get the newsletter written
and out on time, and indeed I will, but there is absolutely no reason why it should be in the same
format. So this month will be a short piece with fewer links than usual.

Autumn seems to be coming in all too quickly here in Cornwall, we have not had a good summer,
our westerly Atlantic winds have given us cool cloudy unsettled weather when much of south and
east England has been experiencing sunny days.

Along with autumn, and partly brought by the damp summer, we have a bumper crop of produce to
harvest in our garden: tomatoes, runner and French beans, courgettes and marrows, garlic and
onions, potatoes and turnips – plenty to cook up a feast every evening with very little else needed.
I have much to celebrate and be grateful for there.

Autumn also brings sadness for me, saying goodbye to the hopes of a hot summer and days at the
beach - although with our changeable weather there is plenty of time yet for a warm spell. My
feelings are a combination of dreading the cold of winter coming and welcoming the cosy evenings
and quieter times.

All change for me is a part of the cycle of life and death, I find it useful to mark and celebrate changes.
Losing or leaving behind anything involves sadness or grief in a small or a large part, depending on
what that thing is. Saying goodbye to friends and colleagues you have worked with, leaving a class
you have enjoyed, moving house, completing a book or project that has taken up a lot of your time.
All these are losses of a sort and the reason for the changes may be positive but will still leave a gap
that I find it helps me to recognise.

One example that I have experienced myself is the ending of treatment for an illness such as cancer.
The day that you are officially discharged from the care of your hospital consultant is something to
celebrate. It can also feel as if you have lost some support, so for me it was both a celebration and
an ending.

For you:
-               What changes are happening for you?
-               Do you want to plan celebrations for new beginnings, ceremonies of farewell, or
maybe recognising ‘what I have right now’?
