Reflections: Reasons to be cheerful

Like many people I think, I find myself struggling at times to fight against the gloomy news that seems to come at me from all sides. So instead of struggling I can just let it go, and choose to focus on something else.

Today I have chosen to look at ‘reasons to be cheerful’. My list starts off looking like this:

1. Spring is coming: snowdrops are already out in my garden, I will pick some today to put in my ‘snowdrop vase’. I bought this on a visit to Cambridge where I met up with my niece Chris from New Zealand and my cousin Valerie who lives in Cambridge. We had a lovely ‘family’ day sightseeing, picnicking by the river, and visited the craft market where I bought a little green and white pottery vase. Valerie told me they look lovely with snowdrops in so every year I fill it with flowers and remember the happy time we had that day.

For you: what is there around you in nature to reconnect you with things that matter?

2. The election of Barack Obama: there must have been millions of words written about this, so I won’t add too many more. What ever the politics involved, Obama’s election is an inspirational example of a man who had a vision and went all out to achieve it, taking people along with him. The simple fact of 2009 being the year of the first black president of the USA is something to celebrate, even more significant to me is the way he is already making change happen.

For you: what is there around you in the world to inspire and remind you that dreams are worth working and fighting for?

3. The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust: I recently applied for a travelling fellowship with this wonderful organisation (click here to learn more, a brief extract below). I was amazed to find out that applications to the Trust have been dropping off so some people are missing the opportunity of a lifetime. I will learn soon if I have been successful – if so I will be travelling to New Zealand to study business start up support and training there and how the Kiwi way of doing it could add to what we already do here. Here are some details from the website:

“Each year the Trust aims to award 100 Fellowships to British citizens. Each Fellow receives a grant to cover return and internal travel, daily living and travel insurance within the countries visited. This year the average grant was £5,500 covering overseas visits normally of between 4-8 weeks. All you need to do is to apply with a project relevant to one of the ten subject areas announced annually. No qualifications are required.”

For you: if you see money as the barrier to following your vision, are there creative ways you can find the support you need?

4. Friends and family: I feel so thankful every day when I see the emails that come into my mail box from friends and family, all sharing their lives, offering or asking for support, sending photos of children and happy events. I feel rich beyond measure and connected around the world.

For you: can you connect more often with family or friends to share experiences? (For me tears and laughter both become more cathartic when shared with others).

Continue your list on, I find it reminds me of the wonderful richness and variety of my life, in spite of any troubles I may be experiencing.

Accessibility: my sincere thanks to a newsletter reader who very politely pointed out that I have been remiss in letting you know about the access arrangements for the venues for workshops. Please accept my apologies for not doing this automatically.

Chacewater Village Hall: the Killifreth Room that I use is upstairs and has two means of access if stairs are difficult for you for any reason. There is a fully wheel-chair accessible lift. Also, as the building is set into the hillside, it is possible to access the room by going up the road and in the rear entrance, it would be necessary for the glass doors to be opened for you.

Your requirements: if there is anything I can do to make it comfortable for you to attend a workshop, perhaps seating, cushions, extra heating, or dietary requirements, please do not hesitate to contact me by email or phone.
