Reflections: Abundance in the midst of change

Over the last week or so in Cornwall we have enjoyed some autumn sunshine and warmth after the wet summer. I have been for several long walks on the cliffs and, surrounded by the exuberant abundance of nature, I have been reflecting on what is happening – in the wider world and in my life.

It is easy to be caught up in the worry and fear that the current financial turmoil is generating, but on my walks I felt able to reconnect with what is really important to me. Up there in the sunshine, the wind was full of the scent of the fields being harvested, the sounds of the gulls and the sea booming below. There were butterflies in the hedges, blackberries, late-flowering plants.

There was so much abundance: the oceans, the sand, the rocks covered with life: seaweeds, shellfish, anemones, and fish and shrimps in the rock pools. The hedgerow plants and the crops in the fields growing, flowering, producing seed, then dying back ready for the cycle to start again. And change is happening all the time: the ocean never stops moving, any individual molecule of water is forever travelling. Not only around the oceans but through the cycles of nature: evaporating in the sun, falling as rain on the land, nurturing the plants, being absorbed into the bodies of animals and human beings, and thence back into the water cycle once again, eventually to return to the ocean. The rocks are being eroded by the sea and wind, producing pebbles and sand, which is eventually laid down to produce new rocks.

Change is natural and eternal, change is good – but does not always seem that way to us. I know I can sometimes feel threatened by even small changes. I know now that feeling is a clue for me to look at why this is and to challenge myself to deal with it, to stretch outside my comfort zone a little – and to grow. For me, my biggest times of personal growth have been when things have been most difficult for me: when I or my family have been affected by illness or bereavement; when I have been made redundant; and now, when the financial situation is tricky for all of us.

Abundance is all around us even in the midst of all the change, as well as the abundance of nature, there is the amazing human friendship and willingness to help, the smiles of family and friends, the abundance of available information and free resources on the Internet, to mention just a few examples. I know I have mentioned my gratitude lists before and will not apologise for doing so again – it is such an important way of reconnecting with your core values and defending yourself from what might feel like a storm of negativity all around.

For you: without the irritation and discomfort of the grain of sand, the oyster would not produce the magical pearl. What pearls might be produced for you from any discomfort you are feeling now?

Are there any opportunities in your own situation that you might miss if you focus only on the downside?
Write a list turning some of the negatives to positives: e.g. the rising cost of food has encouraged a huge increase in people growing their own with all sorts of spin-off benefits.
Decide on two actions to celebrate the abundance in your life right now. And go and do them!

Feedback, a thank you

New Dare to Blossom Workshop in Cornwall: “Abundance in the midst of change”
I have postponed the planned workshop on 4 October and the next Dare to Blossom workshop is now on Saturday 29 November, at Chacewater Village Hall, near Truro, Cornwall.

Following my thoughts above, I have developed a programme for a new workshop. We will be sharing exercises to encourage the feelings of abundance and enable us to rejoice in the power of change. I will post more details on my website as soon as I have developed them – this is hot off the press!

The price is £50, and there is a special “two-for-one” offer, bring a friend and share the cost, i.e. pay £25 each. You can secure a place by sending a deposit of £10 before that date. Follow these links for further details and the booking form.

For anyone outside Cornwall – why not treat yourself to a weekend break? I can help with finding accommodation if you wish and suggest places to visit – my favourite cliff walks for example for a stimulating walk to blow away the cobwebs! The Eden Project is open all year round and you can bask in the Mediterranean or Tropical Biomes regardless of the weather outside.

Other inspiring workshops and courses

Several friends are running workshops and courses this autumn. I have personal experience of their work and would highly recommend that you go along if any of these events appeal to you.

Saturday 25th October 2008: Exploring Meaningful Relationship

A workshop with Anna Colmer, the Rainbow Room, St Erme, near Truro, 10am – 5pm

We do not live in isolation but in a world of connections. It is through relationship, of all kinds, that we learn to know ourselves better and to enrich our lives through community. In this workshop, we’ll be exploring the energetics of relationship and how we can choose, more
consciously, to make a meaningful connection with ourselves, with others, and with the wider world.

You are invited to a day of sharing and participation, with like-minded people, so simply bring yourself, with a beginner’s mind - and a willingness to be open, curious and playful. This is an opportunity for us to reconnect more authentically with ourselves, and with others, to own
our power and to co-create the world in which we wish to live.

Tea, coffee, herb teas, water and biscuits will be provided. Please bring some food to contribute to a bring-and-share lunch.

Cost for the day is £35.

Please contact Anna for further information, or to confirm your place, on 01326 210931 or anna@zerobalancer.co.uk

Boosting your Confidence and Self Esteem with Fiona Crump of evolution personal and corporate development
The course is designed to address the underlying causes of low self esteem and to help delegates develop tools and techniques for boosting their confidence. It will take place over 6 weeks on Tuesday evenings, starting on October 28th, from 6.30 to 8.30 p.m. Structured in this way it will allow the learning from each session to be fully embedded before you learn more next time. Tools and techniques can be practised during the week and your experiences shared with other delegates at the following workshop. The course will take place in evolution’s beautiful and inspiring Engine House overlooking St. Agnes village and Trevaunance Cove.
The cost is only £57.00 for the full six weeks and I can personally recommend Fiona’s calm and engaging style – I wish I was free and could attend myself. For a booking form please email: esther@evolution-development.com or phone Esther on 01872 555939

Business Builder Programme for Coaches
In the September newsletter I mentioned the business builder programme that I had signed up to with Karen Purves and how it was proving an invaluable source of support and inspiration. Karen has now launched her offering, it is modular so you only pay for a module at a time. And, there is a guarantee that if you receive the module and it doesn’t do anything for you – just return it and have your money back.

There is a very special offer at the moment, Karen giving away the first module! So, you pay just £8.84 to cover the charges for packing and postage for the first week in October if you are quick.

There is a special link here for you to use – it is an affiliate link so I do benefit if people decide to buy. Please be assured that I would not recommend the programme if I was not sure it was a great one. I am just starting the second module now and will let you know how I get on.
