May Day in Padstow (Cornwall)

Today is May 1st and celebrated in Padstow every year with the ‘Obby ‘Oss celebrations. Some background here with a link to a video from last year.  The town is filled with greenery and flowers, the bands of accordion players and drums play a tune that haunts you long afterwards.  Local people come home from far and wide to take part and renew links with friends and family.

I remember the excitement of going along as a child in my new summer dress, visiting the fair and being bought a helium balloon.  Mine was a ‘Red Indian’ with a head band and feather, which I loved. I kept it long after May Day, even after it had gone very flat!

More recently, when my mother lived in a nursing home in Padstow, we spent a wonderful morning watching the performers coming up the hill and dancing especially for the residents of the home.  My niece Jo was visiting from New Zealand that year and the three of us sharing the experience made it even more special.  This is my favourite time of year in England with the flowers and new leaves everywhere.  Such a feeling of energy, growth, and abundance.

Reflections: growing strong roots

Sarah Rozenthuler runs workshops around the country coming up, based on the  “Conversations With God” books. (See more below)   I recently attended the Cornwall event, and I found it inspiring and thought-provoking, and met some very special people (not least Sarah herself, and her colleague Tricia).

One of the ideas that Sarah introduced was that developing a business or a new creative project is like planting a seed.  You may be putting in a lot of time, effort and resources (keeping your seed, warm, feeding it and watering it), but nothing seems to happen for ages.  You may be feeling like giving up, despairing of any growth ever happening.  What you may not know is that your business seed is responding to your care and work.  It has been growing roots that a spreading out and providing a strong foundation.  If you give up at that stage you will never know that a green shoot was about to appear.  Two little leaves would open, the shoot would grow tall and strong with lots more leaves. A flower bud would appear and blossom, later to produce fruit and new seeds.

Many people give up just at the point when the roots have grown and the shoot was about to appear above the surface.

How can you tell if your seed is germinating without digging it up and damaging the roots?  With real seeds you just have to carry on being patient at least until the normal germination period is over (and for some seeds this can be years).  With the seed of a business or idea some of the ways I can tell are to ask myself some of these questions:

How to I feel about my idea?

Does it still have ‘life’ for me?

Does it inspire me?

What feedback am I getting? (if you are not getting any, try asking!)

What else can I do to provide the perfect conditions for germination?

More or less heat, water, feed?  (Challenges, training, reading?)

Does my idea/seed need a bigger pot?  Am I restricting my growth by ‘playing small’?

Interesting events

Increase Your Peace: “A New You” Workshop. The next workshop in Cornwall is on 25 October, and London dates are 26 June, 6 September and 13 December.

Sarah says: “Experience the power of a group gathering together to make the wisdom of the New Spirituality come alive. Using practical exercises, meditation, journaling, guided visualisation and story telling you will:

Create a vision of the life you choose

· Make courageous decisions about what next

Practise using tools for living a more exciting and abundant life"

Reiki Alex: Alex is a reiki healer working in Mevagissey and Penryn, in Cornwall.  She also runs meditation groups for beginners which are bringing people amazing benefits in reducing stress and promoting relaxation. The beginners course covers simple meditation practice, focusing on the breath and posture, building up to a range of techniques so that participants can find ones to suit them and their circumstances to achieve maximum benefit.

Gather Yourselves! A workshop with Anna Colmer:

Saturday 3rd May 2008 at The Rainbow Room, St Erme, near Truro
Sunday 22nd June 2008 at Upstairs, The Courtyard Deli, Falmouth

Both workshops run from 10am - 5pm, cost for each day is £45

I attended a trial run of this workshop that Anna ran at Easter and found it a wonderfully relaxing and engaging day.  I took away with me several techniques and new ideas that are proving useful for me.

Anna says: “We live in interesting times and many of us on the self-development path are finding it a challenge to balance our own truths with a collective consciousness which feels increasingly past its sell-by date. It can be a lonely journey. You are invited to a day of sharing and exploration with like-minded people, the chance to remind each other of what we know and to gain support and inspiration along the way. We are all in this together..

This will be an experiential workshop, so simply bring yourself, with a beginner's mind, a willingness to play and be open - and see where it takes you. This is an opportunity for us to reconnect more authentically with ourselves, and with others, to own our power and to co-create the world in which we wish to live.”

Feedback on the half day Dare to Blossom workshops

I recently ran two short ‘taster’ workshops in Cornwall.  These had a similar format to the one-day programme, with a few new elements I am introducing and obviously with less time for the various sections of the day.  The feedback I received was very positive, for example:

“I have found the workshop very reflective but also empowering and encouraging me to do the things I really feel drawn to do.  Thinking of work as a gift was particularly focusing for me. A very relaxed, safe and friendly session giving confidence to dare to blossom.”

“Really enjoyed the session and found it very warm and helpful. Great group empathy which created a great response and atmosphere.” Tessa, art therapist, April 2008.

It was great to be able to introduce the ideas and my way of working to more people, some of whom might not have been able to come along to a whole day workshop.  My thanks to all those who took part, each and every one of you brings something very special to the workshops.

Forthcoming Dare to Blossom workshops: “Coaching and Creativity”

The day will be a chance to explore the reasons why we sometimes stop ourselves following our dreams and creating the lives we want for ourselves.  We will use coaching and creativity exercises, group discussions, guided visualisation, -  and have lots of fun!

Full day workshop: York Sunday 18 May at Millers Yard. £65 per person, There is a café available to purchase refreshments and lunch.  Bookings have been coming in for this workshop and at the time of writing I have five places left, please book soon if you would like to come along.

East Devon: I am hoping to arrange an event in early July. I have not yet found a suitable venue in the area, if anyone has any suggestions, please do let me know.

Cambridge and Cornwall: dates for these events in the autumn will be announced as soon as possible.

Thank you for reading, do email me with any questions, comments or suggestions, or feedback on particular items.  Please feel free to forward this newsletter to anyone you think may be interested.

I hope to be meeting up with many of you during 2008.

All best wishes

Mary
