Reflections: gratitude
Finishing my book (see more below) has been a big milestone for me, and I already have plans for the next one. I am sure that I would have written more anyway, but the theme has been prompted by feedback from a friend whose insight I greatly respect. She told me she would have liked to read more about me, her challenge is: “Dare to be you, stop hiding behind the coaching, and then challenge the readers to dare to be themselves and really amp up the energy both in yourself and in them.”
So, the working title is “Daring to Blossom: from cancer to coaching and beyond.” – though I may shorten that a little! This brings me to my theme this month: gratitude.
I have been reflecting on all the people who have helped make the book a reality along the way, numerous friends, family, people I have exchanged emails with but never met. I am grateful to all of you, thank you so much. I attended a regular meeting of a local group of coaches and therapists this week. We started the evening with a ‘gratitude circle’, and this was an enjoyable and inspiring activity. We all had so many things to be grateful for, not least the support and friendship of the people in the room. People also described how they had used gratitude exercises in their work with clients and the profound changes it can bring to life when the emphasis of your thoughts is on what is right in your world rather than what is wrong.
For you: this exercise is from my book:
- Write a gratitude list in your journal that you can look at whenever you wish. As well as a list, you can also include positive feedback you have received, things you have enjoyed, events you are looking forward to. This builds up to a source of inspiration to return to when you need some support. - When you go to bed at night think of three things to be grateful for that happened during the day.
This is a lovely thing to do with children at bedtime, it helps them get rid of worries and focus on a positive thought to take into sleep with them. It can also be an opening for talking about their day, especially useful for those children who do not normally share their thoughts and feelings.
